This year in gaming has had seen one of the most ridiculous trends in game development in recent memory: the conceit that there is a reason for nude or near-nude female characters in a game outside of the obvious one involving giving straight male players a boner. Studios that really, really should have known better keep trotting out pretentious narrative reasons in order to explain away any criticism about portrayals or sexual objectification of women in the media. What does breathing have to do with wriggling her breasts at the camera? Next up we got Cortana in Halo 5: Guardians. She's not really nude … but that's what it makes you think of. Take Tomb Raider: the game's success in was never seen as much of a surprise: after all, players got to spend 20 or so hours staring at a pert, leather-clad, female bottom. The resulting "Nude Raider" craze, where players Photoshopped Lara Croft into various sexual configurations, and a patch was created for the game that stripped Lara of her clothes, only added to the game's notoriety and appeal. Eidos, Tomb Raider's publisher, distanced itself from such antics, but later followed up with equally suggestive, if not as explicit, promotional material for the sequel.

Despite all the heaving bosoms and shirtless dudes games seem to be filled with, very few of them go the whole nine yards for the full monty. Whether the nudity is for an 'arty' scene or just the byproduct of a stark custom character, the following games present our heroes the way they were born: as specially designed, unclothed models. There's nothing shameful about nakedness, and playing as these video game characters will give you a chance to let it all hang out with pride.
